OpenAI, a renowned artificial intelligence development company, has announced its steps towards Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) in GPT-5 when releasing its latest models, GPT-4o.
Although still in the development stage, GPT-5 is expected to provide capabilities that surpass previous models in terms of complexity and efficiency.
In an interview with Dartmouth Engineering, Mira Murati, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of OpenAI, stated that GPT-5 has seen a significant leap in capabilities:
If you look at the trajectory of improvement, systems like GPT-3 were maybe toddler-level intelligence, And then systems like GPT-4 are more like smart high-schooler intelligence. And then, in the next couple of years, we’re looking at Ph.D. intelligence for specific tasks. Things are changing and improving pretty rapidly.
The rapid development towards more advanced artificial intelligence that resembles human intelligence is currently underway.
AI vs. AGI
One of the main differences between AI and AGI is the ability to think. AI is limited to tasks that have been programmed into it, while AGI has the ability to learn and develop its capabilities on its own, similar to the human learning process. This enables AGI to handle new situations and solve complex problems without the need for reprogramming.
GPT-5 Release Date
While there is no exact date yet, rumors suggest that GPT-5 is likely to be released around the end of 2024. OpenAI has demonstrated impressive speed in releasing new models, with GPT-4 launched just four months after GPT-3.5.
Availability and Access
Currently, commercial GPT models such as GPT-3.5, GPT-4, and GPT-4o can be accessed through ChatGPT with a free option. Users can access the latest models by subscribing to ChatGPT Plus, which also provides access to additional tools such as the Dall-E image generator. There is no information yet on whether GPT-5 will be available to free users after its launch.
While uncertain, the hope to achieve Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) with GPT-5 remains. However, industry experts have long doubted this possibility. Nonetheless, with the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence technology, optimism about its success is rising.
Challenges and Resistance to GPT-5
Despite OpenAI developing GPT-5, there is a movement to halt its progress. A petition signed by over a thousand public figures and technology leaders has been published, calling for development beyond GPT-4 to be stopped. This has gained attention, especially as concerns about technology are growing among governments and the general public.
With rapid technological progress, GPT-5 is a crucial step in the journey towards more advanced artificial intelligence. Although challenges and fears about its impact still exist, OpenAI continues to move forward towards achieving the desired Artificial General Intelligence.
